Membrane Switch Construction Type
RIGID BASE CONSTRUCTION: Typically utilizes a printed circuit board (pc board) to support switch circuitry, mounting hardware, sub-assemblies and any electronic components. - Etched printed circuit board
- Unclad laminate with screen printed shorting pads
- Spacer
- Membrane
- Overlay with or without adhesive
- Rear adhesive/insulator (optional)
FILM BASE CONSTRUCTION: Consists of flexible film layers that will provide a thinner overall package thickness. - Rear adhesive (not shown)
- Substrate
- Spacer
- Membrane
- Overlay with or without adhesive
- Rigid backer (optional)
OVERLAYGRAPHICS REQUIREMENTS - Graphics must be applied on a separate layer as an overlay.
- Graphics and colors are applied on surface opposite touch surface (second surface printing).
- Can be embossed
POLYESTER MATERIAL: Used for graphics overlay. Type and general information Gloss - Vivid colors
- All types of displays are legible
- Good chemical resistivity
- Shows fingerprints and, unless hardcoated, is easily scratched
- Can be embossed
Matte finish - Colors less vivid than gloss finish
- LED display is legible
- Non-glare appearance which diminishes seeing cosmetic flaws
- Can be embossed
Texture - Fine texture
- Heavy texture
- Can be embossed
Hardcoated - Provides scratch resistance
- Embossing not recommended
Selective texturing - Fine/matte texture
- Not recommended for embossing
POLYCARBONATE MATERIAL: Used for graphics overlay. - Type
- Gloss
- Velvet texture
- Suede texture
- General information
- Vivid colors with a textured finish
- Gloss finish can be selectively textured
- Will be affected by chlorinated hydrocarbons and strong alkaline's
- Shows scratches
- Through textures, displays can be difficult to read unless a special "clear coat" is applied to the front of the filter area.
- Hardcoating improves scratch and chemical resistance
- Can be embossed, but not recommended with hardcoated or selective textured material.
- Special coating for UV protection.
SWITCH CONTACTSMATERIALS: Used for shorting pad and switch configuration. - Rigid base
- PC board is copper plated with electroless tin alloy and/or gold plating
- Membrane is silver conductive ink and/or carbon
- Film base
- Conductive silver
- Other conductive inks such as carbon or a silver/carbon blend are available for special applications
SWITCH RESISTANCE (terminal to terminal) - Rigid base
- Less than 2 ohms
- Film base
- Silver ink typically provides less than 100 ohms depending on circuitry layout
- Higher resistances available in other conductive inks.
SWITCH/LED LOGICTYPES OF SWITCH LOGIC - Both sides out
- XY matrix
- Switch to common
- XY to common
- Film base design may require crossover technology
- LED logic (when applicable)
TERMINATIONSRIGID BASE - .025" square pinned stock inserted and trimmed to length
- .270 to 1.0 inch long +/-.020
- Tin plated
- Gold (15 millionths) over nickel
- Solder pads
- Ribbon cable/Flat flex cable
- Header
FILM BASE - An integral single or multiple polyester tail as required by switch matrix and customer interconnects
- Typical conductor .100" on centers and .060" wide
- .050" minimum from edge of trace to edge of tail
- Die cut or notched to meet customer connector requirements
- Flex tail terminations (tin or gold plated)
- Berg clincher type connectors 65801 series, can be male or female type.
- Others such as Nicomatic, Amp, Molex
- Housings can be plain, latching or polarized.
